Using NanoFlick on your iPhone with your team
New to NanoFlick? How to start making videos for your organization in the app, and why the space you start a video in matters.
Your organization uses NanoFlick to make short videos, and it has given you the NanoFlick app with everything unlocked. You don't need any video experience. The app tells you what to film, a few seconds at a time, then puts your shots together into a finished video, ready to share. No editing needed.
This page covers what you need to know to make videos for your organization in the NanoFlick app on your iPhone. If you haven't accepted your invitation yet, start with Joining a team.
Getting started
Get the app
Download NanoFlick, free, from the App Store on your iPhone.
Make sure you're signed in to the app with the same account you joined your organization with: the same email address, or the same Apple or Google sign-in.
Check you're in your organization's space
The app opens on the "What's Your Story?" screen, where you choose what to make (the + button at the bottom brings you back to it). The round account button at the top right has a colored ring when you're in your organization's space (its brand color, or lavender if it hasn't set one). No ring? Tap the button and choose your organization's name.
Pick a template and start filming
Choose one of your organization's templates, tap Start This Flick, and film each shot it suggests. When you're done, NanoFlick puts the video together and you can share it.
A few words you'll see
- Flick: what NanoFlick calls a video you make. Your flicks are in My Flicks.
- Template: a ready-made plan for a video. It's a short list of shots, each saying what to film and for how long. Your organization makes templates for the videos it needs, so you never start from a blank page. A template is a guide, not a rulebook: skip a shot, change the order, or add your own.
- Brand kit: your organization's look, set up by its admins. It can include its logo, an opening or closing clip, music and a caption style. The app adds it to your flicks for you, so they look like your organization made them.
- Space: whose flicks you're making, your organization's or your own (called Personal). This is the one thing worth getting right, so read on.
Your two spaces
The app has two spaces, your organization's and Personal. The one you're in when you start a flick decides whose flick it is. If you belong to more than one organization, each has its own space.
| Your organization's space | Personal | |
|---|---|---|
| Whose flicks | Your organization's | Yours |
| What you get | Pro, paid for by your organization: every feature unlocked | Your own plan: free, unless you pay for one yourself |
| NanoFlick watermark (a small NanoFlick logo on the video) and endslate (a closing NanoFlick screen) | None | Yes, on the free plan |
| Your organization's brand kit | Added automatically (the template's kit, or your organization's default) | Only if the template brings one |
| Templates | Your organization's first, then NanoFlick's public template library and your own | NanoFlick's public template library and your own |
| Seen by others in your organization | Counts of what you make (see below) | Nothing |
The account button
At the top right of the "What's Your Story?" screen and of Settings there's a round account button. It appears once you're a member of an organization. Tap it to see:
- Personal
- your organization's name, with a checkmark when you're in its space
- View organization when you're in your organization's space (your plan, your role and your teammates), or Plan details when you're in Personal
Tap a space to switch. Switching only changes what you see: it never moves, copies or deletes a flick.
How to tell which space you're in
- The account button has a colored ring: your organization's brand color, or lavender. In Personal it has none.
- The tab bar at the bottom takes on a light tint of the same color.
- My Flicks is titled My Personal Flicks, or My your organization Flicks.
- The "What's Your Story?" screen starts with a category named for your organization.
My Flicks shows one space at a time
My Flicks lists only the flicks in the space you're in. If a flick seems to be missing, switch spaces: it's in the other one. Nothing is deleted when you switch.
A flick belongs to the space you start it in
The space is set the moment you start a flick from a template, and it can't be changed afterwards. A flick can't be moved from Personal to your organization, or the other way.
It's the space that decides, not the template. Even your organization's branding doesn't settle it: some of its templates bring its brand kit into Personal too. So before you start a flick for work, check that you're in your organization's space.
Started a work flick in Personal by mistake? It stays in Personal, on your own plan. Switch to your organization's space and start it again from the same template: your organization's plan and brand kit apply from the first shot.
Your organization's templates
In your organization's space, the "What's Your Story?" screen opens on your organization's own category: its templates first, then the public-library templates it has pinned for you. Your own templates and the rest of NanoFlick's public library are there too.
Your brand kit
If your organization has a brand kit, the app adds it to new flicks you start in your organization's space: the kit on the template, or else your organization's default kit. There's nothing to set up. A kit includes only what your organization chose to put in it, so a flick with no music or no opening clip is usually by design. To see what's in your kit, or to choose a different one for a flick, see Your brand kit in the app.
What others in your organization can see
When you joined, you agreed that your activity in your organization is visible to its admins. Members who use the NanoFlick dashboard can see it too. Here's exactly what that covers.
For flicks you make in your organization's space, they can see on the NanoFlick dashboard:
- when you last used the app in your organization's space;
- how many flicks you've started, finished and shared;
- which templates and brand kits you used.
They also see totals for the whole team, such as where flicks were shared and how long they took to make.
On the dashboard, they can't see:
- your flicks themselves. The app reports counts and times, never what you recorded or what you called it.
- anything you do in Personal. If you use one of your organization's templates while in Personal, it adds to that template's overall count without your name.
Anything you post publicly, for example to the NanoFlick community, is public as usual.
If you leave your organization
- To leave, tap the account button, then View organization, then Leave Organization. An owner can't leave from the app: they transfer ownership on the web dashboard first.
- Your Personal flicks stay with you, untouched.
- Flicks you made for your organization are hidden, but kept on your iPhone. If you rejoin, they come back.
- If an admin removes you, they may give you time to finish and export your organization's flicks. My Flicks shows the date. Any new flick you start in that time goes to Personal.
If something looks different
- No account button? It appears once you're a member of an organization. Make sure you're signed in to the app with the same account you joined your organization with.
- A flick is missing from My Flicks? Switch spaces. It's in the other one.
- A work flick has the NanoFlick watermark? It was started in Personal. See the tip above.
- A red badge on the account button, or "Subscription ended" under your organization's name? Your organization's plan has stopped, so flicks in its space are on the free plan and its brand kit is paused. Ask your organization's owner to reactivate it.
